FAQs

  1. What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and every other martial art?
    • Jiu-jitsu is designed to empower the weak against the strong and there are no physical prerequisites to get started. Literally ANYONE can learn jiu-jitsu! Our classes and curriculum, here at KGJJ were designed from the ground up to ensure that learning is as easy and efficient as possible!
  2. What if I don't have any previous experience?
    • Not a problem! Our beginner course, Fundamentals Gi Class, was specifically designed, from a structure and a safety perspective, for first-time jiu-jitsu practitioners. This program will teach you the fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu and Self-Defense in a structured way to learn. Our team of instructors has been trained to help ensure your success regardless of experience. These are the reasons why KGJJ is the premier school in Indiana.
  3. Do I need to be in shape?
    • No, we love you exactly how you are. You don't get in shape to learn jiu-jitsu, you do jiu-jitsu to get in shape!
  4. What should I wear?
    • For your trial period just show up in comfortable workout attire. Everything else you may need, such as uniforms, can be acquired at the school. No special training equipment or protective gear is required.
  5. Do I need to call someone "Sensei"?
    • Black Belts in Jiu-Jitsu are called "Professor", however we operate on a first-name basis.
  6. Can I bring a water bottle? If so where should I keep it?
    • Yes, you can bring a water bottle and store it near the edge of the mat
  7. Who will I practice with?
    • As a first-time student (and during your rank as a white belt), we will pair you up with a slightly more experienced student who can answer your questions and help guide your learning throughout the classes.
  8. Will I get injured or embarrassed?
    • If you get injured or embarrassed you won't come back. Everything about our beginner programs was specifically designed to make the classes as safe and encouraging for new students as possible. As a strict and general rule, bullying behavior or unsafe behavior is not tolerated at our academy.
  9. Can I bring a friend to class?
    • Yes. Referrals are our number one source of business. Jiu-jitsu is so fun and addictive that people can't help but talk about it to their friends. Feel free to bring a friend to any beginner class you attend! You will even get entered into our referral rewards program!
  10. How will my first class go?
    • It will be the best class of your life.
  11. If I enroll, do I have to compete?
    • Not at all, most Jiu-Jitsu practitioners do not compete. On average only 5-10% of all the students in any given academy compete. As such we don't ever require anyone to compete.
