Do I need any experience to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
No experience is required. Most students start with no background in martial arts or athletics. Students with limited experience are placed in the beginner classes which are structured to help beginners learn safely and confidently from day one. Our instructors all follow the same curriculum ensuring consistent instruction and quality.
Do I need to be in shape to start?
You do not need to be “in shape” before starting. Training itself helps improve fitness, mobility, and confidence over time. Classes are paced appropriately, and you’re encouraged to progress at a level that feels right for you.
Am I too old to start training?
No. Adults of all ages train at KGJJ. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is adaptable and emphasizes technique over strength or speed. Many students begin later in life and train safely for years.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe?
Safety is a top priority at KGJJ. Classes are structured, supervised, and taught with control. Students are encouraged to train responsibly, communicate with partners, and respect their own limits.
What if I have injuries or physical limitations?
Instructors can help modify training as needed. Many students train while managing past injuries or limitations. We encourage open communication so training remains safe and productive.
Is the environment welcoming for beginners?
Yes, the culture and environment is one of the things we are most proud of. Our academy culture emphasizes respect, patience, and support. Beginners are welcomed, guided, and encouraged to learn at their own pace without pressure.
Do I have to compete to train?
No. Competition is optional. Many students train purely for personal development, fitness, confidence, and enjoyment.
What should I wear to my first class?
For your intro class and trial period, wear comfortable athletic clothing. If you decide to continue training, instructors can guide you on appropriate uniforms and gear, which can be acquired through the school for convenience.
Are classes separated by experience level?
Yes. Adult classes are structured to accommodate beginners and experienced students, with appropriate guidance and progression. Youth programs are organized by age, experience and development level.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good for kids?
Yes. Our kids and youth programs emphasize confidence, discipline, respect, and positive behavior alongside physical skills. Classes are structured, supervised, and age-appropriate.
Is it safe for children?
Safety is a priority in all youth classes. Instruction focuses on control, awareness, and responsibility, with close supervision at all times.
Can I try a class before committing?
Yes. We offer a free intro class and a free trial period so you can experience training, meet instructors, and ask questions before deciding if KGJJ is the right fit for you or your child.
Is there a long-term contract?
We aim to be clear and fair with our membership structure, as well as contract and non-contract options. Details can be discussed during your intro visit so you understand everything before making a decision.
